Cypress Pillars
Changes in soil moisture and acidity in wetlands sometimes result in the die-off of copses of cypress trees, like the one shown here. The trunks remain standing, providing homes for insects and for the birds which feed on them, as well as high, clear vantage points and nesting sites for raptors such as the osprey.
