The waters of Lake Apopka, like those of most lakes in Florida, are relatively shallow (mean depth 1.6 meters), having been formed from ancient sinkholes rather than from the gouging of immense glaciers such as formed the deep Great Lakes. Being shallow, the lake is also more placid than deeper lakes.
