Damselfly This showoff is, to be precise, the female ebony jewelwing. (Entomologists tend to be quite poetic in naming species.) Their scientific genus is Calopteryx, meaning "beautiful wing." The genus is known commonly as the demoiselles, or damsels (although Pablo Picasso used the word to refer to the four prostitutes in his famous cubist painting, "Les Demoiselles D'Avignon"). |
